Sarah Drew is pregnant in real life. But her character — Dr. April Kepner on Grey’s Anatomy – is a virgin. So it begs the question: Will her pregnancy be written into the storyline?

“They are going to hide it,” Sarah tells The Hollywood Know. “They want to play out the virgin storyline.” Then she adds with a laugh, “They would have to knock April up really fast.”

At the time we spoke to the 30-year-old actress, who is due in January, she and her husband Peter Lanfer did not know the sex of the baby, saying, “We have gone back and forth as to whether we want to know or if we want to be surprised.”

Fans of the show will recall that April had been dating Dr. Robert Stark (Peter MacNicol) last season, but when he asked her back to his place, she balked. She didn’t know if he was The One. That ended their relationship, but even so, Stark recommended April for the job of Chief Resident.

As for what we can expect next on Grey’s Anatomy, Sarah says that since last season ended with a lot of relationships falling apart, we are going to see the fallout from that and see the split couples try to find their way back to one another.

“For my character, it is a whole new world,” she adds. “I am chief resident now, so I am very busy so far, but, as you can expect, no one is listening to a word April has to say no matter how organized she is and how much work she has done to prepare everybody for the work that they are supposed to be doing. She really has an uphill battle. She needs to find a way to win people over.”

April also commented on the rumors — started by Patrick Dempsey — that some of the original cast members might be departing and that may be why some of the newcomers are getting more storyline this season. “I am not in the writer’s room, so I don’t know what is motivating any decision in that regard,” she says. “Basically, everybody on the show wants all the regulars to stay. That is definitely the desire. But I think they are going to be sharing more storylines, because we have been here for a couple of years and it is our turn.”

Grey’s Anatomy returns Thursday, Sept. 22 at 9 p.m. on ABC.
