Giuliana Rancic, co-host of E! News and Fashion Police and star of the reality series Giuliana and Bill, made a stunning announcement on Monday’s episode of Today: she has breast cancer.
“Through my attempt to get pregnant for the third time through IVS, we sadly found out that I have early stages of breast cancer,” announced Rancic. “It’s been a shock.”
Rancic, who’s wed to season one winner of The Apprentice, Bill Rancic, recounted how her doctor insisted she have a mammogram, while she was undergoing another round of in-vitro fertilization. The doctor explained that it was a precautionary measure, since surges of hormones during pregnancy could accelerate cancer.
Rancic, who was 36 at the time of the test, resisted at first, since she was under 40. But, eventually, she agreed to the mammogram, which discovered a tumor.
Rancic reported that she will undergo surgery, followed by six weeks of radiation therapy, and noted that her prognosis is good.
“I will be okay, because I found it early,” contended Rancic, crediting her husband Bill’s support with getting her through this trying time. “Bill is unbelievable. The best part about Bill is he lets me cry when I want to cry … He lets me feel what I’m feeling. I think that’s very important for a spouse to do.”
As for Rancic’s quest to have a child, she insisted she will forge ahead with it, noting it was all part of “some master plan. I truly feel God was looking out after me,” said Rancic. “This baby will have saved my life.”
